Undeniable The Oregon Trail Series Laura Stapleton 9780989920117 Books
Let me begin by saying I know this is fiction. Some of the worst fiction I've read in an awfully long time. It was repetitious, boring and slow beyond description. The whole story was spent telling the reader that the characters washed dishes in the river, picketed the horse, fed the cow, gathered firewood. Seriously. Over and over. Add to it the h was too stupid to live and you have this book. Beth Ann was ridiculous. *Spoiler* She felt obligated to stay with her abusive, worthless brother-in-law, as a replacement for her dead sister (his wife). This was because of a promise to her deceased father. I completely understand that women were thought of as property and not allowed the freedoms we know, but this was beyond that. She stayed with the abuser even though they weren't married. *End spoiler*As for the explicit sex scenes others have mentioned, they were laughable. Yes, there was sex, but the descriptions were comedic.
After the beginning, I found I could read the first sentence every few pages and not miss a thing. If you're looking for good historical fiction about the Oregon Trail, do yourself a favor and please keep looking. This was an insult to the reader.

Undeniable The Oregon Trail Series Laura Stapleton 9780989920117 Books Reviews
Laura Stapleton has written a book that will capture the hearts of its readers. Only one of the books in the series, but this book can be read as a stand alone book.
Beth Ann made a promise to her Pap on his death bed to be the wife of her sister Lizzy's husband, Daggart. That death bed promise changed her life and not in the way that she could have ever imagined. She never expected it to be easy, but to lose her family farm, and head west on a trip for gold 10 years after the gold rush. What would become of her? How would they survive?
Daggart Bartlett is struggling with many demons that are affecting the way he handles life, his wife. Only interested in finding GOLD, and getting there as quickly as possible he doesn't understand that he is treating his wife poorly. Or maybe he does and just doesn't care.
Nicholas Granville is helping his brother Sam lead a wagon train of settlers to the west. Nicholas has been struggling with his past, both professionally and personally. Sam feels that this is the best way to get his brother back to the land of the living so to speak. Nicholas doesn't expect anything special to happen on this trip, just to get the settlers from Missouri to California. But nothing is how it seems when he falls for a married woman.
The story line is well written, taking you through the rugged country of the west. As you read you can envision yourself traveling along with the wagon train, going through the struggles that befall Beth Ann. If you enjoy historical fiction you will certainly enjoy this book. There are some sexual scenes in the book toward the end.
I do love books by Laura Stapleton. She does write a lovely romance.
I love the way that Laura describes what is going on - really makes you feel like you are part of the story. The beautiful scenery that she describes is amazing!!! When you think back to the days when people traveled by covered wagons and the things that they encountered on the way - it really makes you appreciate our ways of living and traveling. I wasn't really thrilled about Beth Ann (Lizzy Lou) being treated the way she was by her so called husband -- but it did make the story better. I don't write spoilers -- but this is definitely a book that once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting the book down.
This is an new author for me and the book was free, so I gave it a try. Beth was annoying and rather stupid. She's with her abusive brother-in-law to honor a promise made to her dad. Daggert wants Beth to wear her much smaller shoes and he dry humps her when he's drunk but otherwise doesn't touch her. Maybe the explicit sex comes after 50% (at which point I quit reading) but there certainly wasn't any of it before then. In the beginning Nicholas (the hero and a widower) and his brother Samuel, who lead the expedition see that she's being abused and see that she is as safe as they can make her. Daggert has sold the farm and everything that comes with it, so Beth's beloved animals are left behind, including the cow named Erlene. Now that struck me odd because Daggert liked milk with his meals. Anyway, Nicholas is able to retrieve some of Beth's items from the farm and includes the her beloved cow which she promptly forgets to water. Beth is walking her way across the country knitting socks. The tedium of that, the washing of the dishes (but never her self), fear of downing, people wandering around aimlessly got to be too much. Also, there is a Frenchman named Claude who cant speak English except around the campfire when drinking whiskey. Had to reread that a couple of times to be sure it was the same person. They would circle the wagons at night but didn't corral the livestock in there, which was the main reason the wagons were circled. There is zero character development and the desire/lust/love between Nick and Beth felt forced. Dialogue was cringe worthy. I won't continue with this series.
An interesting look at the people and the Oregon trail route itself that travelers used in their search for gold and land in the West. Daggart Bartlett was a mean, self important man, who treated his wife Elizabeth as a slave. In town for supplies he sells Beth's family farm without asking her and purchases supplies for a trip to the California gold fields. Nicholas Granville, his brother Samuel and hired hands were gathering together people who want to try a different life in the West. Life on the trail is hard and Daggart continues to demean and physically abuse Beth at every turn. Nicholas Granville wants to look out for Beth, making sure her husband treats her decently, but his younger brother cautions him against confronting the husband.
