What an EYE OPENER. So much has become clearer to me that had me puzzled. I think as far as understanding the supernatural and end time events and deception I place this book in the top 3. Very revealing and I ccan understand why Nee said he has to fight many spiritual battles to write this book. Not information the adversary wants you to have. I have read this book multiple times over the years at different stages of my Christian walk and the wisdom contained is always fresh and relevant though it was written nearly a century ago.
As Christians our biggest danger comes from our living out of our souls (wills, minds and emotions). Sanctification is the ongoing bringing into conformity our conduct with our position. Living out of soul allows the flesh to rule and renders us fleshly. and when we walk in the appetites of our flesh we're not pleasing to God. What we do is important, but more important is the source of what we do. Praying is good but if I'm praying to be seen, it's not pleasing to the Lord, etc. Our self (soul) is our biggest problem but not seeing the true issue is dangerous. God desires that we live from our spirit being powered by the Holy Spirit to do His will.
I do not recommend this book for anyone who hasn't been growing in grace with God for a few decades, but that having been said it points to the same subject that all Messianic Jews and Christians need to learn eventually and that is to rely only on the Lord. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches IF we abide in him and him in us then we will bare much fruit, but without him WE CAN DO NOTHING. Nothing good anyway.
This one is REALLY GOOD. I wish I could give it 6 stars.
Watchman Nee in this relatively short book provides a pointed warning that works of the Soul and works of the Spirit are not one and the same. Some feelings and phenomenon that would seem to be of the Spirit are often nothing more than the efforts of man through the exercise of the "latent power of the soul." In this book we are warned that the manipulation of our own powers is a critical part of the Enemy's strategy for our destruction. The ideas here may or may not be strongly backed by Scripture. Let the reader do his own prayerful research and draw his own conclusions...
This book was recommended to me by a friend with whom I was having a discussion about religion. I had never heard of Watchman Nee, and was surprised to learn he is so well known as a Christian writer and thinker. I was impressed when I read about him on Wikipedia. So, I ordered this book on my . I had never heard the soul explained in the way Nee described it, but it seems to basically conform with scripture and more traditional theology. It's very easy reading. A person can read it in one or two sittings.
I can't say the book was life transforming for me (or anything so dramatic) , but Watchman Nee does seem worth reading for those interested in Christian thought and life.
While I am beginning to really enjoy reading Watchman Nee, this book gave me the distinct impression that he was at a level of faith and understanding about spiritual matters that few of us can relate to. I still read his books, but after reading this one I am more aware that sometimes I may not agree with his writing. It is not to say that anything he says is wrong, or shouldn't be considered useful, it's just out of my realm of belief or understanding. Others should read it and judge for themselves.
